Cooperstown, New York鈥檚 Glimmerglass Festival has revealed its full 2019 programming ahead of the July 7 launch of this summer鈥檚 lineup. As previously reported, the next season will include the world premiere of Tony winner Jeanine Tesori and Tazewell Thompson鈥檚 Blue.
The opera, directed by Thompson and conducted by John DeMain, follows an African-American family grappling with the loss of their son, who was killed by a police officer. Eric Sean Fogel will choreograph. The Glimmerglass commission from OPERA America, including one dedicated to female composers.
The season will first open July 6, 2019, with a revival of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II鈥檚 Show Boat, directed by Francesca Zambello and E. Loren Meeker. James Lowe will conduct the classic American musical. The production will be followed by stagings of La Traviata (again directed by Zambello) and the Jay Lesenger-helmed The Ghosts of Versailles (in a co-production with Royal Opera of Versailles).
The Festival will also present a new adaptation of Tchaikovsky鈥檚 The Queen of Spades that incorporates text from Pushkin鈥檚 short story, as well as the Benjamin Britten youth opera Noah鈥檚 Flood.
