The Metropolitan Opera has revealed additional details about The Mothers of Kherson, a new opera by Ukrainian composer Maxim Kolomiiets and librettist George Brant. Originally announced in 2023, the commissioned work is based on the true story of Ukrainian mothers who embarked on a mission to rescue their children from Russian-occupied territory.
The Mothers of Kherson will have its world premiere at Polish National Opera in Warsaw in October 2026, and then arrive at the Met in the 2027-2028 season. The production will be directed by Barbara Wysocka, conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson, and star soprano Erin Morley. Listen above to Morley singing an excerpt from the opera.
In a , Met Opera General Manager Peter Gelb said, "This is one way of fighting back. We don't want the world to forget what's going on. This is an artistic way of reminding them."
The Metropolitan Opera has been steadfast in its support of Ukraine following Russia's invasion in 2022. In addition to producing concerts in support of Ukraine, the Met—along with Polish National Opera and the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture—has established the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, which will embark on its fourth summer tour this year, led by Wilson. The tour will feature the premiere of a suite of music from The Mothers of Kherson.
