The Costume Shop consists of a talented team of artisans who support Juilliard鈥檚 students in a professional atmosphere as they perform in a multitude of performances and projects across varied genres.

The First Hand鈥檚 main role is to work with a Draper on the construction of costumes and to assist with alterations. As part of the Production Department, their work is an integral part of attaining our goal of providing the highest caliber of production experience for the gifted students for whom public performance is a keystone to their training.

This is a full-time seasonal (42 weeks, 8/18/25 鈥� 6/5/26) in person position. Work hours are Monday through Friday 9:00- 6:00 pm with occasional night and weekend calls.

The salary for this role is $53,000 - $54,500 per year.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Perform industrial and domestic sewing, serging and hand sewing, as well as the estimating and cutting of fabric. Washes and rolls all fabric as needed.
  • Pulls and coordinates undergarments etc. as needed with the Costume Design Assistant Apprentices.
  • Prepare for fittings by having the costumes ready and in the fitting rooms. Support the Draper during fittings, taking notes on the alterations required.
  • Attends fittings for non-built garments and takes notes on the alterations required in coordination with Costume Design Assistant Apprentices.
  • Assist with the alterations of costumes other than those being built.
  • Prepares work for Stitchers and per diem employees.
  • Supervises stitchers, per diem employees, and Costume Design Assistant Apprentices working on the project so as to assess their abilities and maintain a high level of quality.
  • Coordinates dress rehearsal notes in the absence of the Costumes Shop Supervisor.
  • Assists in teaching the Costume Shop Apprentices on proper sewing techniques as needed.
  • Assists with taking yearly student measurements and maintaining measurement database.
  • Assists with the restocking of the fitting room and costume stock as well as general supplies, informing the Costume Shop Supervisor of items required.
  • Fulfills maintenance duties on a daily, weekly, and yearly basis in the costume shop and storage areas.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years鈥� experience in a professional costume shop.
  • Experience in costume construction for opera, drama, and dance productions.
  • Knowledge of costume history and vocabulary.
  • Proficient in fabric yardage estimation, pattern adjustment and cutting abilities.
  • Proficient abilities in operating industrial and domestic sewing machines and sergers.
  • Proficient hand sewing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in a wide range of clothing construction techniques and alteration methods.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work well collaboratively as part of and in a team setting.
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, inclusiveness, and belonging.

Preferred Background:

  • Working knowledge of draping, flat patterning and tailoring techniques.
  • Experience working in an educational institution.
  • Experience in the training of staff or apprentices.
  • Computer literacy, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
