BREAKDOWN
QUEENS
SYNOPSIS: From Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok (Cost of Living, Sanctuary City) comes an epic drama about hunting for the American Dream, finding family, and facing the ghosts you left behind. In an illegal basement apartment in Queens, multiple generations of immigrant women fight to launch a new life. But when a young Ukrainian woman comes searching for the mother who abandoned her years ago, she forces a reckoning with the impossible choices the women made to survive. Directed by Trip Cullman (We Had A World, Choir Boy), Queens chronicles the strivers who sacrificed whole worlds for the chance at something remarkable.
SEEKING:
RENIA [CAST] - female. Polish. Early 40s. An immigrant woman in search of security and a piece of the American dream to call her own. Determined and opportunistic. Works hard; looks forward, not back. The daily fight to make ends meet and feel visible in a country that is not her own hardens her. She鈥檚 a survivor, but at what cost?
PELAGIYA - female. Belarusian. Mid 30s-early 40s. One of the longest-term residents of the Queens apartment where the women live, and the one in charge - until Renia ursurps that role. Sharp, dry, constantly on alert. Exacting, likes to be in control. Very direct. Turns on a dime. We see her health decline over the course of the play.
AAMANI [CAST] - female. Afghan. Late 30s-early 40s. Measured, grounded, a straight-shooter, but has the soul of an artist. Along with Pelagiya, one of the longest-term residents of the apartment where the women live, and she holds the memory of all the women who have been through. Left a lover and a career in the humanities behind in Afghanistan, and she holds those memories as well.
ISABEL [CAST] - female. Honduran. Mid 30-early 40s. High-strung, combative, defensive. She has left a daughter behind in Honduras, and now must go back because her mother is dying. Scared of making the wrong decision, no matter what she chooses. Her life in America isn鈥檛 perfect by any means, but she will miss it, in her unsentimental way.
INNA [CAST] - female. Ukrainian. 20s. A young woman who has escaped the terrible mail order bride relationship which brought her to America, and has come to Queens in search of her mother, who immigrated without her when she was a young child. Angry, hurt, and in need of some kindness - if she can remember how to accept it. She has learned to be suspicious and defensive, but she鈥檚 still very young, and maybe it鈥檚 not too late to undo some damage.
LERA [CAST] - female. Ukrainian. 30s. Inna鈥檚 friend in Ukraine. Looking for a path to a better life by trying to attract a foreign husband. Her optimism is tempered by cynicism, but she is still hopeful. Relies on Inna, and vice versa.
AGATA - female. 30s/40s. Polish. An immigrant who has settled fairly comfortably into American life, with a partner, and eventually a house in the suburbs. Supported Renia when she first came to America, and has struggled to move past Renia鈥檚 betrayal of her. A forceful personality. Cool and not one to turn the other cheek.
GLYNIS [CAST] - female. Honduran-American. Late teens/early 20s. Isabel鈥檚 daughter, who traveled to America from Honduras on her own at 12. Tough, street-smart. Hides her vulnerability, but not as well as she thinks she does. Wants to do the right thing. Needs to survive.
