It's the first solid week of post-Tonys grosses, and the winners are winning. Oh, Mary!, now boasting a Tony-winning star (and writer) in Cole Escola, and director in Sam Pinkleton, broke the house record at the Lyceum for the 12th time, with a six-figure increase from the week previous to see it take in nearly $1.4 million. Best Musical winner Maybe Happy Ending and Best Play winner Purpose also saw big increases, along with Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the most Tony-winning play of the season; Best Revival of a Musical winner Sunset Blvd., and The Picture of Dorian Gray, starring Best Leading Actress in a Play winner Sarah Snook.
On the whole, grosses fell across Broadway's 38 shows, by almost 15%. But when you lose both Good Night, and Good Luck and Othello, two of the boards' highest grossers, that's likely to happen. Both played their final performances June 8, leaving Wicked to reclaim its number-one spot, continuing to fly high with renewed interest from the two-part film adaptation. Also making the top five last week were usual suspects Glengarry Glen Ross, The Lion King, and Hamilton, and top-five newcomer Sunset Blvd.
And speaking of the loss of Othello and Good Night, and Good Luck, the impact to average ticket prices really shows just how expensive tickets were to each. Both were selling tickets for notoriously high prices leading to averages in the $400 range, and yet somehow still filling almost all of their seats. In their final week, highs for both in terms of their total gross, the average ticket price across Broadway was $138.68. Last week without either, that average fell by nearly $14 to $125.12. That's nothing to be upset about, but Broadway's box-office totals will be missing those star-driven revivals nonetheless.
And what are the top tickets in their absence? Unsurprisingly, the also-star-driven Glengarry Glen Ross is leading both Broadway's average ($225.09) and top ticket ($799), followed by Jonathan Groff in Just In Time (an average of $224.14 and top price of $574.50) and 2025 Tony winner Snook in The Picture of Dorian Gray ($213.56 average and $597 top). Groff, of course, is one of Broadway's own, proving that one need not necessarily be a screen star to bring in audiences!
