The Broadway League has launched a new initiative aimed at audience development for the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, titled East to Broadway. The project is the latest of the League's audience development programs, which also target the Black and Latine communities via the Black to Broadway and 隆Viva! Broadway initiatives.
The project kicked off May 7 with a special event at Broadway's current Best Musical Tony Award nominee Maybe Happy Ending. The event featured a post-show talkback at The Museum of Broadway, moderated by East to Broadway founding member Kevin Lin and featuring show writers Will Aronson and Hue Park, director Michael Arden, and cast members Darren Criss, Marcus Choi, and Dez Duron.
"The Broadway League is dedicated to supporting great storytelling and community programs that elevate the many voices of theatre,鈥 says Broadway League President Jason Laks in a statement. 鈥淲e are so excited to launch East to Broadway, and grateful to partner with Maybe Happy Ending to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities."
Prior to the official launch, the project held a special event with Broadway's Yellow Face.
