Off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre will host the world premieres of two works in its 2025-2026 season, presenting the debut of Anne Washburn's The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire and Eisa Davis' ||: Girls :||: Chance :||: Music :||.
The former, a co-production with The Civilians, will kick off the season this fall, with Steve Cosson at the helm. The work is set in Northern California, where a community is attempting to live off the land. When a member of the group unexpectedly dies, their entire world is brought into question. Press notes describe the work as a "story about a death, a pageant, a rescue, a resurrection, pigs, and the act of saying grace." The work reunites Washburn and Cosson after their earlier work on Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play (also with The Civilians) and A Devil at Noon.
Davis' play, a Vineyard commission, will make its world premiere in spring 2026, with Pam MacKinnon directing. The play follows four gifted teenagers at a prestigious girls' music program in Berkeley as they manage their own relationships versus the outside world's increasing disasters. The production will feature live music with improvisatory elements unique to each performance.
An offering for winter 2026 remains to be announced.
"Anne鈥檚 electric tale of an off-the-grid community in crisis, and Eisa鈥檚 exhilarating story of talented young musicians navigating loyalties to one another and their craft, are boundary-pushing, emotionally rich, and wildly imaginative explorations of how we live, connect, and create meaning in unpredictable times," says Vineyard Artistic Director Sarah Stern in a statement. "It's a true privilege to be the home for these new works."
