Gary Edwin Robinson has been named the winner of this year's Excellence in Theatre Education Award, an honor bestowed by The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University. Robinson will be recognized at the 78th Annual Tony Awards, set to be held June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
Robinson is head of the Theatre Arts program at Brooklyn's Boys and Girls High School, where he has worked tirelessly to expand access to arts education for all students. His Career and Technical Education pathway has given students the opportunity to shadow Broadway professionals, making sure more kids know about the full breadth of careers available to them in the theatre industry. He's also been able to collaborate with other programs to take his students to see shows on Broadway and Off-Broadway, feature films, and college tours.

The honor includes a $10,000 award for Robinson's school, and tickets to The Tony Awards and Gala. Robinson's students will also receive a master class taught by CMU Drama faculty.
Nominations for the Tonys' competitive categories were revealed May 1, with Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending sharing the distinction of being the most nominated shows of the season, each earning 10 nods. See the full list of nominees here.

Winners will be named at The 78th Annual Tony Awards, set to broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall June 8, beginning at 8 PM ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. Wicked film star and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo will host the evening.
The Tony Awards are produced in collaboration with Tony Award Productions, a joint venture of the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, and White Cherry Entertainment. Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss are executive producers and showrunners for White Cherry Entertainment. Weiss will serve as director.
