Michael Griffo's Pen Pals has set an Off-Broadway encore at the DR2 Theatre, with performances to begin August 15 and continue through November 23. Suzanne Barabas will again direct.
As in the last engagement, which performed earlier this year at St. Clement's Theatre, a rotating cast of starry women will lead performances. Nancy McKeon will reprise her originating performance opposite Gail Winar August 15-31, with future pairings to include Michelle Clunie and Megan Follows (September 3-14), Kathleen Chalfant and Ellen McLaughlin (September 17-28), Kate Burton and Pauletta Pearson Washington (October 15-26), and Sharon Lawrence and Maureen McCormick (November 12-23). Additional casting is to be announced.
The work follows Bernie and Mags, two women living in different countries who are best friends despite having never met, thanks to a 50-year pen-pal relationship. The work made its world premiere last year at New Jersey Repertory Company. McKeon and Barabas are reprising their work from that run, and the earlier Off-Broadway bow.
"Having this incredible ensemble of powerhouse women bring Pen Pals to life is an absolute joy and privilege," says producer Lisa Dozier Shacket in a statement. "Each of them brings a unique voice and depth to this remarkable story of friendship and resilience."
The creative team includes set designer Jessica Parks, costume designer David C. Wollard, lighting designer Jill Nagle, and sound designer Nick Simone. Rose Riccardi is serving as production stage manager.
Shacket is producing with Rachel Stange, Joe Trentacosta, Logan DeWitt, Anthony Hazzard, Scott Stolzenberg, and Holly Garman, and in association with NJ Repertory Company. General management is by LDK Productions' Michael Shannon.
