Proud Mary, a new musical with a book and lyrics by Jennifer Paz (Miss Saigon, Les Mis茅rables) and music and lyrics by Anthony Fedorov (American Idol, Rent), will get a developmental reading at NYC's Dramatists Guild April 25.
The work follows three daughters who become pregnant out of wedlock at the same time, disrupting the strict traditions of their religious Filipino American family.
The cast will include Liz Casasola (Miss Saigon), Jaygee Macapugay (Suffs, Here Lies Love), Hazel Anne Raymundo (Avenue Q, Pacific Overtures), Emily Borromeo (The Prom, School of Rock), Shea Renne (Hadestown, Here Lies Love), Reanne Acasio (Here Lies Love, Hamilton), Red Concepci贸n (Miss Saigon, Chicago), Reuben Uy (The Great Leap), and Christopher James Tamayo (Maybe Happy Ending, Les Mis茅rables). Casting is by Michael Cassara.
The upcoming reading follows earlier presentations and development at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Fall 2024 Festival of New Musicals, Goodspeed's Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove, and East West Players.
May Adrales (Vietgone) is directing, with J. Oconer Navarro (Here Lies Love) serving as music director. Brian Spector and Caitlin McNeilage are executive producing, and Sing Out, Louise! Productions is general manager.
