Hailey Rohn directs the show, which is based on both the novel and the screenplay by Stephen Chbosky. Rohn was granted permission by Lionsgate to put the show on.
In an interview on onwardstate.com, Rohn said, "I鈥檝e read the novel so many times that these characters seem like friends to me. There was a lot of pressure to pick the right actors for the characters, but there鈥檚 no character where I think I could鈥檝e found someone better."
