A new West End revival of George Bernard Shaw's Mrs. Warren's Profession opened at the Garrick Theatre May 22, and the reviews are rolling in. The production, which began performances May 10, will continue through August 16. Dominic Cooke is directing.
The production features mother and real-life daughter sharing the stage, with five-time Olivier winner Imelda Staunton starring as Mrs. Kitty Warren opposite daughter and Bridgerton star Bessie Carter as Vivie Warren. The cast also includes Kevin Doyle as Reverend Samuel Gardner, Robert Glenister as Sir George Crofts, Reuben Joseph as Frank Gardner, and Sid Sagar as Mr. Praed. Casting is by Amy Ball.
Shaw's classic play sees a young woman coming home to meet her mother for the first time, only to find out that she's a former prostitute-turned-brothel madam. Early performances of the work, which questions societal assumptions about sex work, were censored and banned, but has since become a stage favorite. Broadway's most recent revival, in 2010, starred Cherry Jones in the title role.
