With a score by Adam Guettel and a book and direction by Tina Landau, Floyd Collins tells the true story of its titular character, a Kentucky cave explorer who got stuck in a cave in 1925, unwittingly launching the country's first media circus as reporters published stories about the (ultimately unsuccessful) attempts to rescue him. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1996, launching both Guettel (now a Tony winner for his The Light in the Piazza) and Landau (Redwood, SpongeBob SquarePants)'s storied careers, but the Lincoln Center Theater production at the Vivian Beaumont Theater marks its Broadway bow. The production is currently up for six 2025 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.
