Full casting has been revealed for the upcoming West End revival of Conor McPherson (Girl From the North Country)'s The Weir, set to play London's Harold Pinter Theatre September 12-December 6. Opening night will be September 19, and McPherson is also directing.
Brendan Gleeson (Paddington 2) is starring as Jack, as previously reported. Newly announced are Owen McDonnell (Bad Sisters) as Brendan, Seán McGinley (That They May Face the Rising Sun) as Jim, Kate Phillips (Peaky Blinders) as Valerie, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Dancing at Lughnasa) as Finbar.
The work centers on four men bantering in a pub in rural Ireland whose merriment is disrupted by the arrival of Valerie, a woman with a personal and affecting story to share. The West End run will be preceded by an engagement at Dublin's 3Olympia Theatre August 8-September 6.
“I couldn’t be happier to be working with this brilliant cast," says McPherson in a statement. "It’s always exciting embarking on a new production, but to revisit The Weir in the company of these particularly accomplished artists feels like a singular privilege, and I look forward to sharing this story with audiences in Dublin and London very soon."
"The Weir is one of the rarest plays around," said Gleeson in an earlier statement. "The last time I appeared on stage was 10 years ago, at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, where I started my career. I can’t wait to be back there, and then to play in the West End for the first time, at the beautiful Pinter Theatre—and to work with Conor on his profoundly moving, inspiring, and ultimately hopeful play."
The production will feature scenic and costume design by Rae Smith, lighting design by Mark Henderson, and sound design by Kevin Gleeson. Kate Horton Productions and Anne Clark's Landmark Productions are producing.
