Broadway News Broadway's Hamilton to Offer 1st Autism Friendly Performance

The matinee of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical will conclude the 13th season of the TDF program.

TDF, the not-for-profit dedicated to sharing the power of the performing arts, will conclude its 13th season of Autism Friendly Performances with the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Hamilton.

The June 29 at 1 PM performance at the Richard Rodgers Theatre will mark the first time the Broadway blockbuster has participated in the ongoing program. 

The performance will be tailored for families with members on the autism spectrum or with other developmental or cognitive disabilities.

TDF Autism Friendly Performances launched in 2011 with a performance of Disney鈥檚 The Lion King on Broadway. Since then, there have been AFP of & Juliet, Aladdin, Cats, the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes, Come From Away, Elf: The Musical, Hadestown, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, How to Dance in Ohio, JOB, Kinky Boots, Mary Poppins, Matilda The Musical, MJ The Musical, My Fair Lady, New York City Ballet鈥檚 production of George Balanchine鈥檚 The Nutcracker, Our Town, SIX, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The King and I, The Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked.

The program operates under the umbrella of TDF Accessibility Programs. Slight adjustments are made to the productions where possible, including the reduction of jarring sounds and strobe lights focused into the audience. In the theatre lobby, there are staffed break areas in case audience members need to leave their seats during the performance.

The musical鈥攚ith a book and score by Lin-Manuel Miranda鈥攅xplores the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, the musical incorporates historical figures such as George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson.

Hamilton also has direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe, casting by The Telsey Office's Bethany Knox, and general management by Baseline Theatrical.

Hamilton, which continues at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre, won 11 2016 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical officially opened August 6, 2015, following previews that began July 13. It is also the recipient of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

A new block of tickets for the Broadway production have just been released with seats available through November 23.

The musical is produced by Jeffrey Seller, Sander Jacobs, Jill Furman, and The Public Theater.
