"We鈥檙e going to do an Off-Broadway, do you know what immersion theatre is? Where there鈥檚 no seats, the venue is you go into a warehouse and there鈥檚 something happening in that warehouse and that鈥檚 the play you鈥檝e come to see, only you become part of it and you travel through with actors," Donner told Yahoo.
"It鈥檚 very popular now," he continued, referring to such immersive-theatre hits like the long-running Sleep No More, Then She Fell and Queen of the Night. "We鈥檙e doing one on 'The Goonies.' It will take another year or so but it鈥檚 going to be wonderful,鈥� he said.
The cult film is an "Indiana Jones"-like adventure story about a group of mismatched teens trying to track down a pirate treasure. The script was written by and Chris Columbus, and directed by Donner.
, the director recalls Spielberg's unexpected handing-over of the project, some of his most memorable moments in the making of the film and the ups and downs of working with the child actors. One of those, Jeff Cohen, who played Chunck in the film, is also featured in the story.
In speaking about a "Goonies" film sequel, which was rumored last year, Donner answered "maybe." "Everything takes a long time to get it right. If you do things fast and quick and easy, that鈥檚 a disservice," he told Yahoo. "If there were going to be another movie it would take us a long time to get it right, because we have a lot of history that we鈥檙e involved with and a lot of integrity that we have to keep to what once was, and lives a life of its own without destroying it. Maybe the powers that be are working on something." Donner's film credits also include the "Lethal Weapon" movies, "Superman" and the Oscar-nominated "Ladyhawke," among others.
