Off-Broadway News Upcoming Sia Musical Saturday Church Will Release 1st Songs June 27

Casting for the musical at New York Theatre Workshop is also complete.

More details have been released for the upcoming musical Saturday Church, which will feature music by recording artist Sia. Previews for Saturday Church will begin August 27 at New York Theatre Workshop, with opening night set for September 15, for a limited run through October 12. The show will release an EP of songs from the musical, titled Are There Any Queens in the House, June 27. The EP can be .

The EP will feature two songs: a newly written one called 鈥淎re There Any Queens in The House?鈥� (featuring J. Harrison Ghee) and 鈥淪unday鈥� (featuring the voices of Saturday Church). The EP is produced by Luke Solomon, Jason Michael Webb, Honey Dijon, Chris Penny, and Sia.

Plus, the show has found its complete cast. Joining the previously announced Bryson Battle (The Voice) and Tony winners J. Harrison Ghee (Some Like It Hot) and Joaquina Kalukango (Paradise Square) will be Noel Thomas (SuperYou), Anania (Gaydar), Primo Thee Ballerino (CATS: The Jellicle Ball), Veyonce Deleon (Being the Digital Griot), Dava Huesca (CATS: The Jellicle Ball), Kristolyn Lloyd (Liberation), Kareem Marsh (Goddess), Jackson Kanawha Perry (Stuntboy: In the Meantime), Caleb Quezon (Kinky Boots!), and Wade Watson (Goddess). Fernell Hogan (Kimberly Akimbo), Michael Samarie George (The Wiz), and J'Quay Gibbs (RENT) will serve as swings.

The previously announced Michaela Ja茅 Rodriguez will no longer be starring in the production due to scheduling conflicts. She will now act as creative consultant and producer.

Saturday Church tells the story of Ulysses, a New York City kid who is also the fiercest tenor at his aunt鈥檚 church. A chance encounter on the subway introduces him to the world of Saturday Church, a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ youth. According to press notes, Saturday Church boldly asks, 鈥淚s faith only for the Holy?鈥� and 鈥淎re there any queens in the house?!!!!鈥�

Saturday Church is directed by Whitney White (Jaja's African Hair Braiding) and features a book and additional lyrics by Emmy nominee Damon Cardasis (She Came to Me) and Pulitzer Prize winner James Ijames (Fat Ham). Grammy winner Honey Dijon (Black Girl Magic) will provide additional music. 

Saturday Church will mark the third musical in New York that has featured the songs of Sia, known for pop hits such as "Cheap Thrills," "Chandelier," and "Titanium." Moulin Rouge! on Broadway has a character singing "Chandelier," while in 2019, an Off-Broadway musical Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise also used Sia's music. It's not yet clear if Saturday Church will feature new songs or previously recorded ones.

Also joining the Saturday Church team are Darius Thomas (Semblance) as hair and wig designer, Rachel Christopher (for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf) as vocal coach, Dave Anzuelo/Unkle Dave's Fighthouse (Merrily We Roll Along) as fight choreographer, and Kelsey Rainwater (Jordans) as intimacy coordinator.

Saturday Church will feature music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Special Tony Award recipient Jason Michael Webb (MJ The Musical) and Grammy winner Luke Solomon (Beyonce鈥檚 Renaissance), and choreography by Obie winner Darrell Grand Moultrie (Fat Ham). It is conceived for the stage and based on the Spring Pictures film of the same name, written and directed by Cardasis.

Saturday Church will also feature scenic design by David Zinn (Stereophonic), costume design by Qween Jean (CATS: The Jellicle Ball), lighting design by Adam Honor茅 (CATS: The Jellicle Ball), and sound design by Gareth Owen (Hell鈥檚 Kitchen). Music direction is by Deah Love Harriot (for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf), with music production by Grammy winner Chris Penny (Beyonce鈥檚 Renaissance). Casting is by Nicholas Petrovich and Erica Hart. Jhana毛 K-C Bonnick will serve as the stage manager.

Saturday Church is produced by special arrangement with Tim Levy and Cindy Tolan.

New York Theatre Workshop is currently producing the musical Lights Out: Nat King Cole, written by Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor (through June 29). Its 2025-2026 season will include a Tartuffe starring Matthew Broderick, and My Joy Is Heavy by folk music duo The Bengsons.
