It's all ties with this year's Tony Awards nominations, announced May 1 by Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce. Musicals Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending all tied to become the most nominated productions of the season, each including the much coveted Best Musical. (With a Special Tony Award being bestowed on Buena Vista Social Club's band, the musical is technically the most recognized in this nomination announcement.)
And even looking at plays (which have less opportunities for nominations), John Proctor is the Villain and The Hills of California tied to become the most nominated plays of the season, with seven each including Best Play. Musicals Dead Outlaw and Sunset Blvd. also earned seven nominations, the second-highest of this year's nods.
And with a starry season on the boards, we got a starry list of performance nominations, too. Leading Actor in a Play gave nominations to George Clooney, Cole Escola, Jon Michael Hill, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Lennix, and Louis McCartney, with the Leading Actress in a Play category going to Laura Donnelly, Mia Farrow, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Sadie Sink, and Sarah Snook.
And Leading Actress in a Musical might arguably be the Awards' most stacked categories. We knew that was likely just looking at who was eligible this season, and the Nomination Committee did not disappoint. Already six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald is now the most Tony nominated performer of all time, now up for her potential seventh Tony win for her fierce Rose in Gypsy. Both Death Becomes Her leading ladies Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard defied the odds to both get nominations, with Nicole Scherzinger also picking up a nod for her already Olivier鈥搘inning performance in Sunset Blvd. But even stacked with Broadway vets, the category also saw a nomination to young Jasmine Amy Rogers, making her Broadway debut in BOOP! The Musical.
You can watch the full nomination announcement above.
