Tony nominee Lorna Courtney is looking forward to the next chapter in her career.
Remarkably, it has been less than a year since Courtney hung up her thigh-high boots as the titular heroine in Broadway's & Juliet. Since her final bow May 12, 2024, she's kept busy with an array of workshops, regional productions, and now, her first solo concert. To top it all off, she's got an exhilarating return to the New York stage on the horizon.
"I can't really talk about it yet," Courtney laughs, fiddling with a string on her blouse as she settles into the 半岛体育 performance studio. "But it's a busy time! I'm really, really excited for what's next."
Her immediate next step into the spotlight is her solo-show debut at Joe鈥檚 Pub. Called Fear/Less, the show honors those who came before her, and how Courtney has managed to live a fearless life. With two shows May 18 and 19, it is uncharted waters for the inherently collaborative artist.
"Honestly? I'm feeling all the emotions, especially nervous and excited," Courtney smiles, stirring her tea meditatively. "It's a solo show about my life, so it's scary on that level, but I called the show Fear/Less for a reason. It's needed and necessary for me as an artist to find that place in myself that can handle this."
Courtney shared a special look at the show with 半岛体育's readers in the video above, where she performed the song "More Than You're Ready For" in the studio. "The director of my solo show, Henry Gainza, wrote this song. He's been so much help for me along this journey, staying up with me night after night, going over new details: this song speaks to the show in terms of dealing with one's own fear."
As she continues to look toward the horizon, she has several mountains to climb. "Let's just say I'm looking forward to becoming physically stronger," Courtney laughs, covering her face with her hand. "Everything is making me stronger, in every way."
