Kansas City Repertory Theatre has announced initial casting for the world premiere of Between the Lines, a musical adaptation of Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer鈥檚 best-selling book of the same name. The new musical is billed as 鈥淏roadway-aspiring鈥 and will be presented by special arrangement with Tony Award-winning producer Daryl Roth (Kinky Boots), who has been behind the project since its inception.
Between the Lines is scheduled to run September 8 through October 1, 2017, at Spencer Theatre on the UMKC campus.
The New York-aimed musical features a book by Timothy Allen McDonald and a score by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson.
Arielle Jacobs (Aladdin, In the Heights, Wicked) will star as the high school protagonist, Delilah, and Curt Hansen (Hairspray, Wicked, Next to Normal) will play the role of Prince Oliver. Tony-nominated director Jeff Calhoun will helm the debut production.
Here鈥檚 how the show is billed: 鈥淲hat happens when the line between fiction and fantasy becomes blurred with reality? When the handsome hero in her favorite book literally starts speaking to her, seventeen-year-old Delilah thinks she has found the perfect escape from the challenges of her life. Is it possible to live the story you want, if it鈥檚 not the story you鈥檙e in?鈥
The design team includes set designer Tobin Ost, costume designer Lindsay W. Davis, projection designer Brad Peterson, and music supervisor Daniel Green.
鈥淎 production like this has the ability to achieve great artistic success now and in the future, giving KC Rep audiences a front row seat in the thrilling journey of an incredible new musical,鈥 commented artistic director Eric Rosen in a press statement. 鈥淲e are thrilled to be working with the multiple Tony Award-winning Daryl Roth Productions, one of the most acclaimed Broadway producers, and some of the finest creative talent in our industry on Between the Lines.鈥
The KC Rep season also includes August Wilson鈥檚 Fences, A Christmas Carol, Simon Stephens鈥 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, and Laura Eason鈥檚 Sex With Strangers. For tickets or information, visit or call (816) 235-2700.
