This concert series featured a different lineup of performers for each song, rather than a role portrayed by one actor for the entire evening. In lieu of the musical鈥檚 book scenes, backstage stories and anecdotes from the creation of the original production are woven between songs.
The evening also featured a selection of Gower Champion鈥檚 original choreography restaged by choreographer and 1995 Broadway revival Hello, Dolly! cast member Randy Slovacek, as well as a 30-piece orchestra.
Hello, Dolly!, featuring a book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Herman, is based on Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker. The original Broadway production, directed and choreographed by
Champion, premiered January 16, 1964, at the
St. James Theatre, starring Carol Channing. The winner of ten Tony Awards, including
Best Musical, Dolly! has been revived on Broadway
four times, most recently with Bette Midler.
Among the numerous actors who have taken on the leading role are Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller, and Ethel Merman, during its initial record-breaking run, as well as Mary Martin, Carole Cook, Dorothy Lamour, Eve Arden, Ann Miller, Michele Lee, Edie Adams, Yvonne De Carlo, Bernadette Peters, Donna Murphy, Betty Buckley, and more.
