Rufus Wainwright and Ivo van Hove's 2024 West End musical Opening Night, adapted from John Cassavetes' film, is getting a live cast album that will release September 12. And now, Center Stage Records has released the first single from the upcoming drop. Hear star Sheridan Smith sing "Magic" from the score . Pre-order and pre-save the release .
The show abruptly ended its London run last year less than two months after it opened, but it's not gone forever. The upcoming album was recorded over the musical's final four performances, and features the entire original cast, including Smith, Nicola Hughes, Benjamin Walker, Amy Lennox, Shira Haas, Hadley Fraser, John Marquez, Rebecca Thornhill, Cilla Silvia, Ian McLarnon, and Jos Slovick. The ensemble included Robert Finlayson, Daniel Forrester, Jennifer Hepburn, Chrissie Perkins, and Issy Khogali.
The musical follows Myrtle, a famous actor sent into turmoil after witnessing the sudden death of one of her fans while starring in a new Broadway play. The project is at least the second time van Hove has brought the movie to the stage, following an earlier non-musical iteration that played Toneelgroep Amsterdam, where van Hove is artistic director, in 2006; and NYC's Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2008.
The work is also set to make its NYC debut with a concert performance at Town Hall September 15. The evening will feature an all-star cast including Sara Bareilles, Laura Benanti, Darren Criss, Patti LuPone, and Elizabeth Teeter, along with Wainwright himself. The special one-night-only concert will be given in support of the ACLU, with longtime Wainwright collaborator Jason Hart music directing. The evening will feature just the musical's songs, and in their original West End arrangements. Along with singing songs, Wainwright will emcee the event.
