Broadway News Joel Grey Is Auctioning Off His Cabaret Costume, and Other Career Memorabilia

The auction will take place June 20.

Joel Grey is clearing out his apartment. Auction house Freeman鈥檚 | Hindman have announced that the two-time Tony recipient is auctioning off the memorabilia from his longtime residence in New York City's West Village. 

The items up for sale includes original film reels from the 1972 Cabaret film, his top hat from that film, his costume from the 1987 Broadway revival of Cabaret, the black lacquer piano that had been in his home for many years, Boris Aronson's rendering for the set of the original 1968 Broadway production of Cabaret, and a painting done by Grey himself of the Statue of Liberty. The auction also includes photos and drawings and paintings of Grey done by other artists. 

The auction, titled Master of Ceremonies: The Joel Grey Collection, will take place June 20 online at . Highlights from the collection will be on display at 32 East 67th Street in New York June 4鈥�18, 10 AM to 4 PM on weekdays.  

Said Grey in a statement: 鈥淭hroughout my many happy decades in Manhattan, I was lucky enough to amass an art collection that speaks to the many friendships and artistic milieu that defined this era of my life and career. I鈥檝e always thought of myself as custodian of these beautiful things and I鈥檓 excited for a new generation to find joy and inspiration in them through this auction.鈥� 

Grey has lived in his Manhattan apartment for three decades. He sold it for $7.6 million in March (he bought it for $1.6 million in 1999), indicating that he was leaving the city. This auction has now made it clear: It truly is the end of an era for Cabaret's original Emcee. See the items up for auction in the gallery below.
