Off-Broadway News New Musical Sweetee Kicks Off May 23 Jordan Tyson and Frozen鈥檚 Jelani Alladin lead the cast of the new show about a bi-racial woman in America during the 1930s.

The New York premiere of Sweetee, a new musical by Gail Kriegel, set in 1930s America, begins performances May 23. Jordan Tyson stars as Sweetee, a bi-racial woman struggling against the constraints of the Jim Crow era.

Sweetee is directed by two-time Emmy winner and five-time Tony nominee Patricia Birch. The limited Off-Broadway engagement will run through June 18 in the Ford Foundation Studio Theatre at the Pershing Square Signature Center with an official opening set for June 1.

Completing the cast are Frozen鈥檚 Jelani Alladin, Katy Blake (Mamma Mia!), Cedric Cannon (Camelot), Adante Carter (Carrie, the musical), Hugh Cha (The King and I), Dave Droxler (Candide), Morgan Siobhan Green (A Dog Play!), Jeremiah James (West End revival of Carousel), Amir Royale, and Katherine Weber (Into The Woods).

Sweetee features scenic design by Timothy Mackabee (The Elephant Man), costume design by Tricia Barsamian (Present Laughter), lighting design by Kirk Bookman (Thoroughly Modern Millie), and sound design by Janie Bullard (Cagney). Doug Katsaros (The Rocky Horror Show) is the musical director, Greg Uliasz (Heaven Can Wait) is the associate director, and Michael Cassara, CSA, is the casting director. The limited run is produced by Dream Big Theatrical.

Previously titled Sweetie, Kriegel鈥檚 musical received an AEA showcase in 2014, also directed by Birch. Listen to select tracks from the earlier showcase of .
