England's Royal Shakespeare Company, which will stage the European premiere of Pulitzer-winning play Fat Ham later this summer, has found its family.
Originally co-produced by The Public Theater and National Black Theatre, this production will run in the Swan Theatre of Stratford-upon-Avon August 15-September 13. The production was originally directed by Saheem Ali, and is directed for the Swan Theatre by Sideeq Heard.
James Ijames's play, which premiered in New York in 2022, is a reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Juicy is a queer, Southern college kid, already grappling with some serious questions of identity, when the ghost of his father shows up in their backyard, demanding that Juicy avenge his murder.
The RSC production will star Olisa Odele as Juicy, Andi Osho as Juicy's mother Tedra, and Sule Rimi as the dual role of Juicy鈥檚 father, Pap, and uncle, Rev.
They will be supported by Jasmine Elcock as Opal, Sandra Marvin as Rabby, Corey Montague-Sholay as Larry, and Kieran Taylor-Ford as Tio. The off-stage understudies will be Denver-Isaac Kwashe, Richard McIver, and Florence Odumosu.
The creative team will include set designer Maruti Evans, costume designer Dominique Fawn Hill, lighting designer Bradley King, sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman, choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie, hair and wig designer Earon Chew Nealey, illusionist Skylar Fox, and fight director Lisa Kopitsky, with casting by Christopher Worrall.
