The New Ohio Theatre is gearing up for the 2nd Annual NY Indie Theatre Film Festival, set to run January 30鈥揊ebruary 3, 2018, at the Off-Broadway venue. The 2018 NYITFF will showcase over 30 short films, documentaries, and web series created by New York theatre artists, including works by playwrights Bekah Brunstetter (The Cake) and Susan Soon He Stanton (Today Is My Birthday), director Annie Tippe (Ghost Quartet), and actor Amanda Quaid (Equus, Cock).
鈥淲e want to support active theatre artists working in NY who are stretching themselves,鈥 explains Marc Stuart Weitz, producing director of the New Ohio. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not just talking about a theatre actor acting in a film. That鈥檚 not quite enough of a stretch. We鈥檙e looking for them to be one or more of the primary artists鈥攍ike director, writer, and/or producer.鈥
The lineup includes Brunstetter鈥檚 short film Again, about a man who watches Groundhog Day over and over (directed by Alexis Jacknow); Stanton鈥檚 short drama Dispatched, about a paramedic who becomes infatuated with a patient (directed by Kyle Wilamowski); English, a short film about an immigrant woman living in Queens written and directed by Quaid; Katie Baldwin鈥檚 short comedy American Daddy, set the day after the 2016 presidential election (directed by Yaara Sumarek); and the web series Unicornland, about a woman who decides to date couples, written by Lucy Gillespie and Nick Leavens.
鈥淢any members of our independent theatre community are reaching beyond theatre to tell stories,鈥 added Weitz. 鈥淲e wanted to create a space where they could share their work and where our audiences could find them. There was great enthusiasm in our community for our inaugural festival last year, so we鈥檙e making this an annual event.鈥
