When 半岛体育 asked Gracie Lawrence and Lizzy McAlpine if they wanted to appear in a joint video together, to discuss their music careers and transitioning to Broadway, it was an immediate and quick yes from both. And when they showed up to the W Hotel鈥揟imes Square for the shoot, where they would be interviewing each other, they arrived excited and with prepared questions. They also traded notes about their busy schedules, with McAlpine saying: "I'd just been finishing my Europe tour. So I flew from Dublin...to New York, and the next day I was in the [Floyd Collins] workshop."
Responded Lawrence: "I did, honestly, the exact same thing where I started the [Just in Time] workshop the day after I got home from my Europe tour. Also from Dublin."
The two laughed together in shock, with McAlpine exclaiming, "That's crazy! Oh my God, we're so connected."
Adds Lawrence: "We're the only two people in the world who might be able to say that."
They're also two actors who are currently starring in shows based on true stories. Lawrence is currently Tony-nominated for playing Connie Francis in the Bobby Darin biomusical Just in Time. Prior to Broadway, she was a member of the band Lawrence鈥攁longside her brother Clyde (plus she's a series regular on HBO's Sex Lives of College Girls). McAlpine currently plays Nellie Collins, sister to the ill-fated cave exploer, in Floyd Collins (which is currently Tony-nominated for Best Revival of a Musical). She is also a singer-songwriter, with three studio albums to her name.
In the video above, watch the two discuss being women in the male-dominated music industry, how doing Broadway is (in some ways) easier than being a touring musician, what's scary about doing Broadway, and how their current gigs are inspiring new music within them. Plus, Lawrence ended the interview with a burning question about mic packs, and McAlpine hinted she might want to do more acting after Floyd Collins.
It was such an easy, chemistry-filled conversation that at the end, Lawrence enthused: "I'm so glad we did this, and I hope other people find it interesting. But if they don't, I'm just glad we did it, for myself."
Floyd Collins is running at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater until June 22. Just in Time is currently in an open run at Circle in the Square Theatre.
