As the Tony nominations are revealed May 1, history has been made.

Audra McDonald has risen to the peak of Broadway stardom, becoming the most Tony-nominated performer in Broadway history.

Thanks to her nomination for playing Rose Hovick in the current Broadway revival of Gypsy, McDonald has reached 11 nominations, breaking her free of the 10-nominations pack with which she was previously grouped. Previously, McDonald was tied with the late Julie Harris and Chita Rivera for the performer with the most Tony nominations.

McDonald became the most-awarded performer in Tony history in 2014, with six wins.

McDonald was first Tony-nominated in 1994 for her performance as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel, winning under the name Audra Ann McDonald. Her five other wins include 1996's Master Class, 1998's Ragtime, 2004's A Raisin in the Sun, 2012's Porgy and Bess, and 2014's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill

Her four additional nominations include 2000's Marie Christine, 2007's 110 in the Shade, 2020's Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, and 2023's Ohio State Murders

Yet another feather in McDonald's cap is her wide ranging variety of performance wins; she is the only performer to win top honors in leading and featured categories for both musicals and plays.

Only time will tell if McDonald will add a seventh statue to her mantle! Winners will be named at the June 8 Tony Awards ceremony, broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall beginning at 8 PM ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. Wicked film star and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo is set to host the evening.
