Real Women Have Curves had a surprise in store for its audience April 22!
Stars Eva Longoria, Sofia Vergara, Ana Navarro, Gina Torres, Roselyn S谩nchez, Jeanine Mason, Lisa Vidal, Gloria Calderon Kellett, Elsa Collins, and more attended the show and joined the cast onstage during the curtain call to celebrate new musical.
The evening was capped off by a special post-show talkback between eight-time Grammy winner Gloria Estefan and the show鈥檚 Grammy winning co-composer Joy Huerta (of the band Jesse & Joy) discussing their journeys bringing pop music to Broadway, what they鈥檝e learned through adapting their musical styles for the stage, the importance of telling women鈥檚 stories, and more. Real Women Have Curves began its Broadway run April 1 at the James Earl Jones Theatre.
The show, which will officially open April 27, stars newcomer Tatianna C贸rdoba as ambitious high school senior Ana Garcia. The musical is adapted from Josefina L贸pez's 1993 play, which also had a 2002 film version.
With a score by Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez and a book by Lisa Loomer with Nell Benjamin, the work follows a first-generation child of Mexican immigrants torn between joining the family garment business or embarking on her own dream of attending college in NYC.
The project is being helmed by Sergio Trujillo, who's directing and choreographing. Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) plays Carmen Garcia, Ana鈥檚 hardworking mother who imagines a traditional life for her daughter. C贸rdoba and Machado are supported by Florencia Cuenca as Estela, Shelby Acosta (1776) as Prima Flaca, Carla Jimenez as Pancha, Aline Mayagoitia (SIX) as Itzel, Mason Reeves (Frozen) as Henry, Jennifer S谩nchez (Elf) as Rosal铆, Sandra Valls as Prima Fulvia, and Mauricio Mendoza as Ra煤l Garcia. Cuenca, Jimenez, Mayagoitia, Reeves, and Valls are all making their Broadway debuts in the production, and all but Mayagoitia are reprising their performances from the musical's 2024 world premiere.
The company also includes Ariana Burks, Quincy Hampton, Zeus Mendoza, Claudia Mulet, Christopher M. Ramirez, Monica Tulia Ramirez, Shadia Fairuz, Elisa Galindez, and Omar Madden.
The production has music supervision by Nadia DiGiallonardo, music direction by Roberto Sinha, scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costume design by Wilberth Gonzalez and Paloma Young, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by John Shivers, video design by Hana S. Kim, hair, wig, and make-up design by Krystal Balleza, and orchestrations by DiGiallonardo, Huerta, Rich Mercurio, and Velez. Casting is by X Casting's Victor Vazquez and ARC's Duncan Stewart.
