The reviews are in for Lights Out: Nat 鈥淜ing鈥� Cole Off-Broadway, which opened May 20 at New York Theatre Workshop. The production began previews April 30, and is set to run through June 29.
Dul茅 Hill (The West Wing) is starring as the titular jazz artist, with Daniel J. Watts (Hamilton) as Sammy Davis, Jr., Krystal Joy Brown (Merrily We Roll Along), Kathy Fitzgerald (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Christopher Ryan Grant (The Ballad of Johnny and June), Ruby Lewis (Paramour), Elliott Mattox (Tammy Faye), Kenita Miller (for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf), Mekhi Richardson, and Walter Russell III (MJ The Musical). Casting is by Claire Yensen.
The play, written by Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor, takes place on the final night of Nat King Cole's variety show and features the crooner's signature songs including 鈥淣ature Boy,鈥� 鈥淚t鈥檚 a Good Day,鈥� and 鈥淪mile." The music is supervised, orchestrated, and arranged by John McDaniel.

The play's Off-Broadway bow may hint at bigger aspirations for the show. Domingo has already announced that he is also developing Cole鈥檚 story into a separate film, with the stage and screen favorite to star himself.
