Sarah Snook was named the winner of this year's Best Leading Actress in a Play Tony Award at the June 8 ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, winning for her work in The Picture of Dorian Gray. The win is a first for Snook, who makes her Broadway debut with the production. It also repeats her success at the 2024 Olivier Awards, at which she won Best Actress for the original West End run of Dorian Gray.
The win is the play's second of the night, following an earlier success for Marg Horwell's costume design. The production went into tonight's ceremony as the second-most Tony-nominated play of the season, a distinction it shares with Purpose. Both are up for six total categories. Said Snook in her speech: "This means so much for a little Australian girl to be here on Broadway...It is billed as a one-person show, and I don't feel alone any night that I do this show, there are so many people on stage making it work, and so many people behind the stage making it work. In particular, a huge thank you to Kip Williams, who is incredible, to create this."
The Picture of Dorian Gray officially opened March 27 at the Music Box Theatre, where previews began March 10.
Adapted and directed by Kip Williams from Oscar Wilde's classic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray features Snook taking on 26 characters, often interacting with herself in pre-recorded video segments that blend the world of filmmaking with live theatre. The production comes to New York following a sold-out run in London's West End in 2024, and originated at Sydney Theatre Company (where Williams is artistic director) in 2020. Williams will try to make magic happen twice, with a similar treatment planned for Bram Stoker's Dracula set for London's West End, set to star tonight's Tony Awards host, Cynthia Erivo.
, Cate Blanchett's Dirty Films has already acquired the rights to adapt the stage show for the screen.
While Snook is the only performer in the production, she is supported at various points by five camera operators: clew, Luka Kain, Natalie Rich, Benjamin Sheen, and Dara Woo. Benjamin Sheen is the camera captain, and the camera operator understudies are Will Colacito and Benjamin Wheelwright.
The Broadway production of The Picture of Dorian Gray features set and costume design by Marg Horwell, lighting design by Nick Schlieper, music and sound design by Clemence Williams, video design by David Bergman, and dramaturgy by Eryn Jean Norvill. Jaymi Knierum is production consultant, and Lisa Iacucci is production stage manager.
Along with Michael Cassel, the Broadway run is being produced by Adam Kenwright, Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen, Daryl Roth, Amanda Lipitz, and Henry Tisch. Foresight Theatrical is the general manager, and Aaron Lustbader is executive producer. Michael Cassel Group is the worldwide executive producer.
